Web design is the artistic or professional work of a person in creating content for a website which is published through the internet, or any other network related service to the outside world. The published information is usually viewed by others via a web browser. The internet browsers that are widely used nowadays are Internet Explorer, Firefox, Safari, Chrome and Opera.
The primary objective behind web design is to create a website usually in the form of an HTML (hypertext markup language). In the year 1980, a physicist called Tim Berners-Lee proposed and prototyped ENQUIRE, a system for researchers to share documents. Berners-Lee specified HTML as the language to communicate over the Internet and wrote the browser software in 1990. Tim Berners-Lee initiated and published the first website in the year 1991. Berners-Lee was the first to combine both Internet communications (email and Usenet) with hypertext.
When the web progressed, the markup language needed to change to be more flexible. Additional features were incorporated like the feature to add objects like tables to a page. Database integration technologies also enhanced the development of web design. In designing websites, a web designer can now use a lot of web designing technologies such as ASP.Net, Javascript (AJAX), CSS (cascaded style sheets), PHP (Hypertext Preprocessor) etc.
Microsoft ASP.Net is a Web Application framework which is developed and designed by Microsoft. ASP.Net enables web developer to build dynamic websites and web application easily. Nowadays it has become one of the popular technologies adopted for designing websites along with HTML.
Another popular technology adopted for creating dynamic websites is JavaScript. JavaScript scripts are usually installed or implemented as part of a web browser in order to provide user interfaces and dynamic websites.
Another technology used is PHP. PHP code is usually embedded into the HTML source document and interpreted by a server with a PHP processor module. Both PHP and JavaScript are free open-source technologies which have become extremely popular.
Some of the popular designing tools are Fireworks, Dreamweaver, Panic Coda, Photoshop and Firebug. These tools help designers create sites more easily. Some of the popular Linux based design tools include OOo Web, SeaMonkey Composer, Nvu, Bluefish, Quanta Plus, Screem, Amaya and GIMP.
As the world progresses in internet technology, the need of web design and its development will also increase. More and more web design technologies and tools with advanced feature are expected in the near future itself.
