If you are reading this article, then you have probably heard of domain names. Domains are those things you type into the address bar to access a website (ie EzineArticles.com).
What you may not know is that people have made thousands (sometimes even millions) buying and reselling them. How do they do that? Let me explain.
Buying Domain Names
When you buy a domain from a registrar company (like GoDaddy.com), then you own the rights to that domain for as long as you register it. You can register for eternity if you wish, just as long as you pay the fee every year.
Domain names are dirt cheap if you buy them directly from a registrar. They are typically only $ 12 or less for a 1 year registration period. That is pretty amazing considering you can sometimes turn right around and sell them for hundreds, thousands, thousands of thousands, or even millions.
How Do You Sell Domain Names?
First you have to get a domain worth something. If you get some long or obscure domain, you will probably never sell it. But if you were lucky enough to get business.com back in the day before everyone else, you could have sold it for millions just a couple of years later (it sold for around 7.5 million).
Once you get a good domain, then you have to list it for sale. The best places are Sedo.com, GoDaddy.com, and even eBay. On these sites, business and domain investors are always looking for a great domain to buy.
Once you list your domain for sale, you just have to sit back and wait for a buyer. If you have not received an offer within a few weeks, I would recommend you try featuring your domain or promoting it on a website or using advertising or press releases. This could help increase interest in your domain.
When you finally do get an offer, it is super easy to transfer it. The big domain selling sites will walk you through it step-by-step, and all you have to do is transfer the domain from within your registrar's account. This usually involves clicking the "account change" button and adding the details.
What if All the Good Domains Are Taken?
It's no secret that the best.com's have been acquired long ago. However, you can still make money with domains. How? First, new products and trends come out all the time. Say a new technology comes out that is not trademarked (like cell phones). If you buy "cellphones.com" then you can then resell it within months for much more.
Also, new domain extensions keep coming out every few years. In the summer of 2010, the new.co domain name extension came out. I hurried to acquire about 160 or so really good domains. I have already made thousands of just off a few domains. I still have about 140 or so left, and these will all be pure profit at this point.
Conclusion: Making Money with Domains is Fun
Buying and selling domain names is so addictive. It is so fun and it is hard to find an easier way to make money. I hope you will consider doing this too.
